The Van has gone... now what?!
05 October 2010 | Bremerton... for a few more hours
Heather/foggy and cool
Slept in the hotel above the Bremerton marina, and will finish up the packing puzzle this morning. Have had to jettison food and other consumables (cleaning supplies, etc.) in favor of large expensive or important things that have to come along. To that end, I found a nice lady walking with her young son last night along the road to our place, and told her, "We're moving and I have to get rid of food and cleaning supplies, would you like some?" She helped me out by taking about 15 pounds of food and supplies - that was fun, and even fun for the serendipity of the meeting. Must have ... ahem! ... slightly overestimated my CR-V's volume! OK, having to take a gekko in a terrarium and a giant cat box (with door) didn't help :-)
Sweet Pea was sold to Cap'n Mark, a self-funded (i.e., he has another job) cinematographer who may be using her to make waterborne films. Very cool. Various furniture items that did not go on the move were bought by neighbors and then by Craig's List folk, until we are down to just a few things that we will donate. Derek sold his car in about 15 minutes on Craig's List! Guess the price was right (he checked the range for that make/model/year on CL and went toward the low end of that, plus it was a nice car for its year/make/model).
Derek is on base finishing up signing a few things, which gave me time to fill you all in on the blog! We should finish up at the house in a few hours; Derek thinks maybe two, so I will assume four, owing to Murphy's Law.
Speaking of Ol' Cap'n Murphy, I was unloading things from the top shelves in the kitchen yesterday and barely caught the edge of the step on the way back down, flipped the stool and landed on my back, banging the tailbone and the back of my head. Ouch. My head is fine, although the neck muscles are sore, must have tensed to cushion the blow, but my tailbone, eh, I think I cracked it. Hurts to bend over. Does not hurt to sit. Hurts to stand for long periods. So, in some ways, this is a better injury than it might have been, as it won't make the car trip painful. Previous experience with tailbone fractures indicates that they can't do a thing but tell you to wait it out, as long as everything still works and you aren't getting nerve tingling... but definitely a Murphy's moment.
The kayaks set up beautifully on the roof with the Thule rack; we tried it at highway speeds yesterday and it's a good thing we did -- got the position "just right" for the trip back from Silverdale.
More from the road... maybe a picture of our kayak-laden human-cat-and-lizard ark!
Update: later that night: Freyja has adopted Helios, the Leopard Gekko. Thank you, we know you will take excellent care of him, and he will love to perch on your arms!
