I attended the memorial service for my uncle today. It was great to see the family.
The weather was kind to us, we had expected rain but it turned lovely for the service. Tom wrote an excellent eulogy for his Dad, with details I had not known (like about how he was stationed on two hospital ships in the aftermath of WW2)

In addition to the usual love for family I am blessed: I really like my cousins... and Cathy and I were able to do something her Dad would have loved: hire a piper to do the honors.

It was a little harder to see the people who had become a second family for him ... they had known him less than ten years so their grief is fresher in some ways. His comrades from the Honor Guard were there to be his Honor Guard in turn:

Plane in 4 hrs... more later. Cathy, thank you so much! We are in your debt and would LOVE to reciprocate! Susan, Richard, Tom, thank you all -- you each made some time to talk, and I treasure that, so much!

Vessel Name: Parallax
Vessel Make/Model: 37' Prout Snowgoose (1982)
Hailing Port: Pensacola
Crew: Derek, Heather and Grant
About:
Two astronomers, looking for variable stars and adventure. After cruising the Caribbean aboard S/V Paradox for 18 months in the early 90s, the crew swallowed the anchor and had a child, always planning their next Great Adventure: cruising under sail with Grant, showing him the world. [...]
Extra:
We knew that if we ever got a catamaran, we'd want a name to celebrate her twin-hulledness. Parallax is seeing the same thing from two slightly different points of view, which with our two eyes is what gives humans our depth perception. It's also a good metaphor for one of the benefits of marriage. [...]
