Seattle and Bremerton

09 January 2011 | Seattle to Bremerton and back on M/V Kaleetan
Heather / 38 F and cloudy occ showers
Peggy was awesome yesterday in offering Grant a sleepover -- I'd thought we would just drive over both days to see if anyone was around and wanting to play. This gave the guys a lot more catch-up time! It was both sweet and strange to dive back and see what still feels a familiar home, but as visitors to the neighborhood.

I am writing this from the tiny keyboard of my Kindle, so will have to finish later...

Later: We had a fun short visit, sipping coffee and nibbling Peggy's tasty muffins. The boys were all excited because Katie was taking them with her son Sorel (who's on a team with Blake, IIRC) to the Bainbridge Aquatic Center. It's got a lot of fun unusual features for the kids, like a Tarzan-style swing into the pool and a "lazy river" for floating -- but Grant got his left foot sucked into the intake on the outer part of the hairpin curve in that lazy river feature -- it was missing the protective grating. His big toenail was injured and bleeding a little (he was very brave so I didn't even know how bad this was until he'd taken his show off when we got back to the hotel). I wound up calling the Aquatic Center to let them know the grating was missing, and that kids might get injured this way. We put neosporin and a bandaid on and Grant went easy on the toe for the rest of the night.

Back in Seattle, we are attending the 217th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, which is going very well. More about that in a post on Thursday, I think.

Vessel Name: Parallax
Vessel Make/Model: 37' Prout Snowgoose (1982)
Hailing Port: Pensacola
Crew: Derek, Heather and Grant
About:
Two astronomers, looking for variable stars and adventure. After cruising the Caribbean aboard S/V Paradox for 18 months in the early 90s, the crew swallowed the anchor and had a child, always planning their next Great Adventure: cruising under sail with Grant, showing him the world. [...]
Extra:
We knew that if we ever got a catamaran, we'd want a name to celebrate her twin-hulledness. Parallax is seeing the same thing from two slightly different points of view, which with our two eyes is what gives humans our depth perception. It's also a good metaphor for one of the benefits of marriage. [...]
