Crisp, Clear, Sunny... excavating

21 January 2011 | Pensacola
Heather/48F and sunny
It's a gorgeous, sunny, chilly day. I started out emptying cabinets aboard so that Derek will be able to start the electrical system work. I also visited Island Quest Marine Canvas to see about adding 6" to the main's sailcover, and replacing the forward windows of the hard dodger with soft plastic.

Derek then took over, finishing the plumbing by installing an anti-siphon valve in a loop of the raw water intake for the head. That's a good thing because yesterday he was pumping bayou water through the head three different ways and we noticed that with the intake valve in the "open" position, it definitely does siphon.

Later in the afternoon we took Grant on a field trip to an old (Spanish, then British) fort near here, Fort Barrancas.

It's pretty huge. The shocking part for us was that it was built by 50 people in 5 years. It's massive.

Vessel Name: Parallax
Vessel Make/Model: 37' Prout Snowgoose (1982)
Hailing Port: Pensacola
Crew: Derek, Heather and Grant
About:
Two astronomers, looking for variable stars and adventure. After cruising the Caribbean aboard S/V Paradox for 18 months in the early 90s, the crew swallowed the anchor and had a child, always planning their next Great Adventure: cruising under sail with Grant, showing him the world. [...]
Extra:
We knew that if we ever got a catamaran, we'd want a name to celebrate her twin-hulledness. Parallax is seeing the same thing from two slightly different points of view, which with our two eyes is what gives humans our depth perception. It's also a good metaphor for one of the benefits of marriage. [...]
