The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Catalina Island

29 September 2014 | Avalon Harbor
We arrived in Avalon Harbor yesterday, Sunday September 28 and were assigned a mooring near the Casino. It was interesting that they had our boat in their database, under the Coast Guard Document number. They didn't know we'd changed the name to Starshine, as they still had the old name, Star Dancer. This harbor is much more calm than Two Harbors/Isthmus.

We found the harbor about 1/2 full. There was a cruise ship anchored out, so there were lots of people in town. We took a tour of the Casino, but it was pretty small.

Today's event was a hike up the hill to the botanical garden and the Wrigley mausoleum. We stopped at the Nature Conservancy Visitor Center to look at the nature displays. I didn't know it, but I dropped my phone while we were watching a nature video about the island.

We left the visitor center and walked up the road about 100 yards. Melodie stopped at a meditation maze and I went to check my phone while she walked around the maze. I couldn't find my phone. We walked back to the nature center to see if I'd dropped it. No one had turned in the phone and when I called it you could not hear it ring.

I activated the Find My IPhone app and saw the phone was down at the waterfront. I called the sheriff's office and found they don't take reports over the phone (surprised?, no).

The nature center staff there was very helpful and offered us a ride down to the LASO Sub Station so I could make the report. I continued to track the phone and saw it was moving around town. There was a Captain on duty and he offered to walk over to where the phone was pinging. It showed it was at the ferry dock, not a good sign. We walked over to the ferry dock and saw the phone now showed out in the harbor, where the Carnival Cruise ship Imagination was anchored. The LASO Captain was very nice and tried to liaison with the cruise ship security personnel, but it was too late.

My phone is on the ship with the thief and there's no reasonable way to recover it. I activated the "Erase my Phone" feature, so hopefully all my data is secure. We spent the afternoon contacting our banks and changing all the passwords for accounts associated with the phone. As you can guess, living this nomadic lifestyle has caused me to rely heavily on the technology offered by the iphone.

Besides the worry about our financial accounts, there's all the boat data I had on the phone, part numbers and serial numbers, etc.

Anyway, just a little drama for us. Hopefully just a stupid thief took the phone and will throw the SIM chip away and sell or use the free phone. We've done all we can do, hopefully they arn't expert computer hackers and can hack the security codes on the phone.
