The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Pat - Partly Cloudy
Today is Saturday March 21 and what a busy week it's been.

We did make it to COSTCO on Tuesday and had quite the adventure getting back to La Cruz. We took the bus into downtown Puerto Vallarta intending to take a taxi back to La Cruz. A lady on the bus said they might close the bridge over the river due to flooding from all the rain. We decided to continue on, figuring a bridge closer was just add to the adventure. We had completed our shopping at COSTCO and we in the taxi headed back when they closed the bridge. What to do? We discussed staying in a hotel, but decided to catch a boat around the bridge closer. We redirected the taxi to Marina Vallarta. Sure enough, one of the guys hawking fishing trips found us a panga. It was not cheap, but we did get a boat ride to Paradise Village on the other side of the bridge. We got in a new taxi and made it back to La Cruz. There was an article in Latitude 38 about this incident, but no mention of us.

Melodie and I took a water taxi over to the town of Yelapa. Yelapa is on the south side of the bay and is inaccessible by road. You can only get there by boat. The town has about 300 residents. We had lunch at a beach palapa and walked up to a small water fall. It is very lush and tropical. It was a nice way to spend the day.

We got the bottom cleaned again while we were here. It was much better than the last time I had it done in La Cruz.

Update on our Pactor Modem (allows email via our radio). I put out a general request on the VHF net and a boat answered. They will hand carry the part to the US on Monday and mail it for us. That way Farallon Electronics can repair it and ship it to my parents in Arizona. I will be visiting them in April and can pick up the repaired modem then. It was kind of strange and a leap of faith doing this. We only met the couple for a few minutes, exchanged hellos and pleasantries, then I handed them a $1500 piece of electronics and money for postage. I'm sure it will turn out fine.

Our friends in the Bay Area Cobra Club (BACC) are planning their kinda annual trip to Santa Barbara in May. We miss not seeing our friends from the club and will miss going to Santa Barbara this year. It's the 11th trip for the club and would have been our 5-6th time down the coast.

The photo is the beach at Yelapa.
