The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Back on the Boat

Pat - Hot
Today is Thursday September 17.

We drove down from Dewey AZ on Saturday September 12 and stayed the night in Green Valley AZ. We wanted to divide up the trip since we have never driven to San Carlos Mexico before. We were anxious about crossing the border and wanted to make sure we arrived in daylight.

We left Green Valley at about 10:00 and made it to the border in less than one hour. We got the "green light" so no hassles with the various boat supplies we were carrying.

We arrived at the boat about 4:00 pm. We made good time with light traffic. The speed limit was mostly 60-65 MPH and I obeyed it all the way.

We found the boat just as we had left it, except in the heat of the day, without a sun shade, it was almost 100 degrees inside the boat. We quickly got the air conditioner up and running. Now it's a bearable 78-79 degrees inside. We put up the sun shade over the boom to help keep the cabin cooler.

We found our VHF radio is on the fritz. We can transmit, but it receives poorly. I took the unit to a neighbors boat and found the same symptoms. I suspected our mast antenna, but it turned out not to be the problem. We will take the radio into town to see if they can fix it. We'll probably just order a new one and get it next month. I have to return for a final doctor visit in October for my hand.

Remember our bad alternator? It crapped out on us in May in Puerto Escondido. We've been running the spare. I caught a ride with another cruiser to the local Alternator Shop. Everything was going well until they cracked open our Ample Power 120 Amp unit. It looks like a normal Delco model, but has super duper stator windings. They were unable to fix it with the parts on hand. It was easy to see why it doesn't work. The stator wires were cooked. The tech worked on it for over an hour, but didn't charge us for his time! We'll add that to the October list.

That's all for now. We're trying to keep cool despite the afternoon temps in the high 90's and high humidity.
