The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Thunderstorm in Guaymas

Pat
Today is Tuesday October 6.

We've been back on the boat for a few weeks. We are slowly getting things put back together for the coming season.

We went into town to see the Matt Damon movie The Martian on Saturday 10/3. There were rain showers expected in the evening, so we thought we go into town and see the show before the rain. It is a really nice theater with movies in English with Spanish subtitles. Only $3.50 USD per person to see get in. We enjoyed the movie. We could hear it raining from inside the theater before the movie ended.

We came out from the movie to find it was POURING rain. There was a foot or so of water running through the parking lot. We got in the car to drive back and found the windshield wipers could barely keep up. Traffic was only going 20-25 MPH. Most drivers had their hazard lights on.

We came to an intersection and stopped for a red light. The cross street was flooded badly and cars waiting to cross were stopped in 1-2 feet of water. A cement truck was passing one of the stopped cars. The cement truck had a big bow wave in front of it. As the truck passed the car the bow wave raised the car off the ground! It was crazy. There were many videos on the internet of cars being washed down the street and other flooding.

We got back to the boat OK. The road was passable getting back to San Carlos. San Carlos is about a 15 minute drive from the much larger Guaymas.

We head back to Dewey AZ tomorrow for a quick visit and trip to the Doctor. Hopefully my last follow-up from my hand surgery in July. We'll stock up on a few supplies and return on Sunday.

That's when the real work will begin. We'll put the sails back on the forestays and get ready for the Sonoran Passage. It's 400+NM passage from here to Mazatlan. It will take about 3 days. We intend to head south the last week of October.

That's all for now.
