The Baja Bash
Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

As many of you who have followed our blog over the last four years you’ll note that I have not given it any attention since last spring. So let me fill in the blanks.

We walked down the beach near sunset Wednesday night. We were able to observe a Nature Conservancy group release baby Olive Ridley sea turtles into the ocean. Melodie and I saw this back in 2007 when we visited Manzanillo on a land trip. The rules have changed over time. They no longer allow tourists to handle the turtles. I guess dirty hands and sunscreen were causing problems. They also don’t allow flash photos as the light confuses the little guys. They put down a rope to keep the people back, then they scoop the turtles onto the sand. Of course there had to be one American lady who didn’t listen and walked up right to the turtles to take a photo. At least her flash wasn’t on.
Eventually all but about 10 of 100 made it into the water on their own. The last 10 got scooped up by a nature worker and dropped into the water. They said only about 1 of 1000 hatchlings make it to 8 years old to breed. They release them at sunset so there are less birds and have a better chance for survival.
