Boat preparations part 3 - Sept 9,2011

10 September 2011 | Les Sables d'Olonne
Voahangy
This is the final chapter (for now) of our boat preparations.
We left La Rochelle for Les Sables d’Olonne, a 50nm journey, primarily to have our enclosures problems attended to. The back enclosures form part of the most used section of the boat: the back deck. It is quiet spacious, with access from both sides, a table and settee which can seat 8 comfortably ( we squeezed in 10 very often too), and still allow people to walk around freely. While bright and breezy on a warm day, it becomes warm and comfortable when we close it up on rainy days and literally turns into our “outdoor room”. The exceptionally wet weather tested our installation and we found that the current design was letting the water in dramatically. Unfortunately the manufacturer (NV) was too busy to attend the boat in July/August, so we finally made the decision to sail up north to their doorstep, stressing to everyone involved that if it was not for this problem we’d be on our way to Spain by now. This time, NV was very prompt in attending the boat and carrying out the modifications and repairs we ask for, in fact it was a real pleasure dealing with Mr Badens (NV Project Manager). What a difference it makes now to have a dry all weather back deck!
As it turned out we had more than the enclosures to repair. We have had on-going problems setting up our satellite communications system: we purchased 2 ISatphones with the dock station and associated software before leaving Australia, only to find that one phone was faulty and the dock station will only work with one computer (we have 5 on board). Inmarsat (the operator) was not very helpful in trying to solve the problem, advising us to return the faulty phone to the dealer in Sydney to have it repaired or replaced under warranty. We did just that with barely 2 weeks to spare in LR, and I must thank TC Communications for being so prompt in sending us another one on time. In the meantime, Terry felt that we could not trust the Inmarsat system any longer, so decided to install an Iridium satellite phone as a back up. Thank you to Robin Marine, who delivered and installed the equipment at such short notice. We now have 3 satellite phones and 2 on-board satellite email addresses. We’re covered!
The rest of the 10 days flew by as we wanted to take advantage of the very good (and cheap) WIFI network around the Marina , catching up with school, various paperwork and internet, we managed to fit in a day of fun at a theme park with a difference “Le Puy du Fou” (which deserves a post of its own). Finally my parents paid us a quick last visit, delivering last important mail, helped us celebrate Terry’s birthday and send us off!

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
