10 September 2011
Voahangy
I realise that my posts so far have been about boat preparations, which I'm sure will interest a lot of people out there but there is more to cruising than boat maintenance (thank god for that!). So let me tell you a little about our first port of call.
We've elected to stay in La Rochelle for the northern summer for several reasons.
Firstly, as mentioned in another post, we already know the town and the contractors from having spent 3 months fitting out our previous boat, a Lagoon 500. It is home to the largest marina in Europe and nearly all services for the boat are available here.
It is also an old town with an interesting past going back to the 12th century, which picturesque street and old buildings have been enhanced making it an ideal place to stroll around. There are quirky shops, hundreds of small cafes and restaurants, museums, parks, beaches for the kids. Being also a hub for many universities, there is a young dynamic vibe to it that appeals to us.
The first thing we did on arrival was to buy a yearly pass to the Aquarium for the kids and I. Located only a few steps away from the wharf, the pass allows us to enter the aquarium anytime we want and jump the queue as a bonus. That alone was priceless, since the queues some days reached 1 hour waiting time. It became Anne's favourite activity for 7 weeks, so much so that it was included in school time.
The advantage of being berthed in the town basin is that we're only steps away from the buzz of activities that engulf La Rochelle in summer. The Tourism Office is so close that we seem to be the first attraction the tourists see when they pour out of their bus. We didn't have to walk to watch the Bastille Day parade, it took place on the square right outside. Marc woke up that morning to the sound of military music and medal ceremony, watched it all from the fly bridge.
Another big event taking place here every year is the French Singing Festival called Les Francofolies. It is a 5-day celebration of singing and dancing showcasing hundreds of French artists, some already famous ( Bernard Lavilliers, Christophe Mae, Alain Chamfort, Jean Louis Aubert), a lot more hoping to be discovered, most known only in France ( see the famous ones), and the odd global sensation (David Guetta). So for the best part of the week, the town is transformed in a giant fair, with performing stages erected in various locations, street performers busking day and night, food stalls along the wharves,... We'll have this ritual of going out for ice cream in the evening, and mingle with the crowds. There is no need to purchase tickets for the shows, as we are surrounded by 2 major stages, and we can hear music well into the night (not unlike being in Salvador for Carnival!) Marc stayed up on deck until 2am to listen to the David Guetta concert, playing only 500 meters from the boat!
After such a big first week, the kids thought the celebrations would go on forever, but they soon learnt to settle into a routine that went like this:
- Morning school
- Lunch from the nearby bakeries
- Afternoon school for Marc, play for Anne, followed by dinghy rowing session, walk to the beach or the chichi stand(!)
- Dinner either at home or to one of the many restaurants in the harbour
Yes, school and boat fit out take up the majority of our time, and we miss out on a lot of tourist activities. But there is something rewarding in just staying in one place and making it our new home for however short a period. It's like experiencing a few weeks of French living. Of course my being French helps a lot with our daily lives, no one has to struggle to find directions or ask for a particular boat fitting. I know Terry and the kids take full advantage of it, and I like to think that their French is improving from this deep immersion in French culture. It will be soon enough when we'll all be strangers in a new place!

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
