New Year's resolutions, again!

07 January 2012 | Union Island, Grenadines
Voahangy
Have you noticed the holidays season seems to be about lists: Christmas list, wishlist, shopping list, party list, resolution list, ...This year, I've discovered something new: a life list.

What is a life list? Well you can read all about the concept here, and to me it is simply a "what do you want to do when you grow up " list.

What intrigues me is how the notion of "list making" has become so popular these days, as if no one ever thought of it before and without one, you'd get to where you are in life simply by chance.

Terry has been making lists for as long as I've known him. In fact, he can't start the day without one, it's mostly work or boat related mind you. But give him a project and soon the notebook will be out, filled with categories and numbered items to be dealt with by a certain time.

I have a certain Mr Ouvrard to thank for getting me started on some form of list making. He was my year 6 French teacher and asked us to work out "Where do you see yourself when you grow up?" as our first assignment. I was 11, and my paper ended with a list of 3 places in the world I wanted to live in: a chalet in Switzerland, a beach house in Rio and an apartment in New York. Looking back, I'm sure Mr Ouvrard would have thought " In your dreams!", but he was kind enough to tell me it was a good list to start from. Obviously, a few adjustments have been made since, I no longer plan to live in any of these places, preferring to visit instead. So far, Switzerland and Rio have been crossed off, leaving New York still "to do".

My lists primarily revolve around "lifestyle" choice: travels and food. But over the years and under Terry's influence, more practical goals have crept in (complete my accountancy degree, obtain a boat license, learn to scuba dive, ...) with each achievement, significant enrichment in my life (our life, really!) And in the age of internet, where you can get information about ANYTHING, items on the list tend to become more specific: go and swim with turtles in Tobago Cays, learn to bake my own French bread, start a sailing blog, start a food blog, improve my Spanish, watch a show on Broadway (any show!), spend more time learning about the kids computer games (that's a hard one), train as a chef (or a teacher, a computer expert, a mechanic, a hairdresser...any trade that could be useful when cruising around the world!) As you can see, I have my own list of "100 things to do before I die". And that's for what I want to do. Then there is a separate list of things to do, to achieve what I want. Have I lost you there??

My 13 year old son tells me that the world will end in 2012. Of course I find the idea preposterous, but in a show of support for his right to his own opinions, I encourage him to write his own "life list" and see what he can achieve before the Apocalypse. His sister has already started hers ( and keeps it in her secret diary) . New Year's resolutions for everyone is to tick at least one item off one's list. How about you?

Happy 2012!

Bonne Annee 2012!

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
