Kids stop at Union

25 January 2012 | Martinique, FWI
Voahangy
Union Island, Jan 2-8, 2012

We are under instructions from the kids to find a more "happening" place to anchor. So our next stop is Clifton, in Union island, mainly for internet & provisioning. The bay is very crowded and we end up anchoring in front of Happy island, made of conch shells, blasting reggae music and the DJ calling out yachties all day long. We're intrigued but we won't get a chance to check it out, as Terry pulls his back. We were meant to stop for one night, have a farewell drink on board with SULYNA (who is headed for Panama next) then leave. We will end up staying 3 days to allow Terry to recuperate (also can't quite operate the boat as confidently, but that's something we need to work on!)

The boat boys are the same as in Tobago Cays (in fact they live in Union, and commute to TC every day!), and come to deliver bread, lobster, saving me taking the dinghy down! As Clifton is the major charter base in the Southern Grenadines, the anchorage is busy with charter boats coming and going, small planes landing 500 meters from the boats... a real beehive of activity!

The town is colourful, though I find it run down, but maybe I am under the influence of Mustique and PSV, with their manicured lawns and squeaky clean paths. Locals are friendly though, and I found this provisioning shop which sells gourmet foodstuffs (French camemberts, Asian noodles, UK ginger beer,...). Temptation again!!

As soon as Terry feels better (i.e. can move up and down stairs) we're off to Chatham Bay on west side of Union. It feels like (almost)paradise found: large bay surrounded by high hills, still a little windy but no swell, no noise from beach bars, no traffic, clear waters with turtles swimming about freely, and a magnificent beach. We also find FRIFLYT, who we have not seen since RBM. The kids are beside themselves with excitement, friends at last! Poor SULYNA, forgotten after 3 days?

3 peaceful days, snorkelling, swimming with turtles, walking up the hills (exercise we all need), down the beach. The local boat boys offer to take rubbish away, and as usual sell fish, bread,..beach BBQ, which we decline after spotting the pet cat looking very emaciated and ears chewed up by some disease (too gruesome for photos). Also as the sandflies eat you alive at dusk, the best place for sun downers is our back deck we decide!

Union Island, 2-8 Janvier 2012

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
