Bahamas: where is the sun?

31 May 2012 | Naples, Florida

Exumas, Bahamas, April 17- May 12, 2012

What a rough passage from Provo! Somebody at the weather bureau forgot to look out the window, and forecasted 19 knots easterly winds and a slight swell for the next 2 days. It was still blowing strongly in Sapodilla Bay, but we’re such trusting people we lefty anyway. Of course, it was misery out to sea: the first 50nm leg to Mayaguana was uncomfortable but bearable, then all hell broke loose and we hit 30 knots easterly winds and 3 meters swell hitting us square on the beam. Needless to say that it was a bad 24hours for the crew, though Terry was not unhappy: the boat sailed well, averaging 9.5 knot ,with a reduced headsail and reefed main, even hitting a new record speed of 14.7 knots!

What a relief it was to reach Exuma Sound: beautiful colours (I know I say that all the time, but we never get sick of it), smooth waters, and lots of yachts.

The Bahamas will be our base for a month, and we already know that won’t be long enough. Off all the islands we’ve visited so far, this is somewhere where you need time: time to explore the hundreds of cays , time to allow for the weather, time to spend meeting the many cruisers you’re bound to run into…I won’t bore you with our daily activities, instead let me share some of the highlights (or worst times) of our stay over different posts.

Let’s start with the Bahamas weather, which most people including ourselves, imagine as tropical bliss.
With the tropic of cancer running south of Georgetown (the Exuma’s main town), once you cross that line you’re not in the tropics any more. While the difference in water temperature isn’t felt until you reach further north, the weather is completely different to the Caribbean’s. Gone are the steady trade winds, here they’re more influenced by whatever happens in mainland USA or even Canada!
You only need to have a depression up north, then watch the winds pick up and go full circle NE-E-SE-SW-N over a 3 to 4 days period. Depending on where you want to go, it generally means having to wait until the system settles down. In the month we stayed in the Bahamas, Terry worked out that weather windows occurred one day a week, when the winds were favourable for us to sail northwards. Of course, it always happened at the wrong time, just when friends boats would arrive nearby (we missed GUMA and MIAOUSS by a few hours!), but that’s the rule of the sea…Sometimes, the break would not occur soon enough, and after days bunkering down in some remote anchorage, we’d lose patience and set out in atrocious conditions looking for a better anchorage (not our smartest move, fumbling our way up to Norman’s Cay in 40 knots winds with driving rain, dodging bombies, and hoping the charts were accurate!) Lets’ say that our foul weather gear came out of retirement, and back in service for the first time since France last year.
Apart from these 8 days of bad weather, the weather was nice though. Windy, but sunny, so we can’t complain too much. And when the sun came out, it was like on the tourist brochures, no, better than that. Crystal clear waters, most gorgeous beaches (nearly as good as Barbuda says Terry), sheltered lagoons…as they say, it’s better in the Bahamas! And we sure made the most out of it. Read on the upcoming posts, to discover some of our favourite Bahamas islands.

Exumas, Bahamas, 17 Avril – 12 Mai, 2012

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
