Arrival in Fort Lauderdale

02 July 2012 | Washington, DC, USA
Voahangy
Fort Lauderdale, May 13 – May 20, 2012

Change of scenery. After months of island cruising, we’re making landfall in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This has been a long anticipated stop over, none less than by the children for whom this is their first trip to the USA. Well, technically, Marc spent 18 months there when he was a toddler on one of our previous cruise, but he can’t remember anything! Both he and Anne have grown up on a diet of US movies and sitcoms and can’t wait to find out if “real” America is like in the movies or better.

As far as the boat is concerned, this is a major port of call, as we’ve planned warranty and modification work. As usual, Lagoon put us in touch with their local representative a few months ago, who organised berthing and sub-contractors upon our arrival. Pier 66, at the Hyatt, will be our home for a month, thanks to Scott (self-described as Lagoon’s welcome wagon in FL) who negotiated good rates for us. Well, by US standards it’s a good deal, considering the fact that we have full access to the hotel facilities (Wi-Fi, pool, gym, tennis court, …) and we can park our car right next to the boat. Convenience comes at a price, welcome to America!!!

Much to our delight, our friends on IMAGINE anchored close by, so that means company for the kids while we get busy organising work on the boat. Actually, the company is mutually beneficial as Marc and Jane are selling their boat and work hard every day at getting it ready for potential buyers to inspect. Their effort will pay off as IMAGINE will end up selling less than a month after arriving in FL! In the meantime, they inspire me to tidy up on board VOAHANGY: every locker is emptied and cleaned up, fridges defrosted, bilges washed, old clothes disposed off,…yes we were in great need for a spring cleaning, but the main reason is also that we plan to leave our boat in the hands of Thierry Menetrier and his team at Multi-tech (Lagoon ‘s local dealer) for all the warranty work and the installation of air conditioning. Since they will need to pull the ceiling down and access under floor areas, we took all our junk off the benches and transformed our guest bedroom into an attic of some sort! Amazing what we accumulate after one year of cruising…

Besides the clean-up, we are also trying to complete school assignments both for Marc and Anne so that we can spend the time away free of school commitments! Needless to say that these are hectic times and guess, who arrived amidst all this chaos? Marie Suzanne and MIAOUSS junior crew! Just when we thought we’d never see each other again, they flew in from Nassau on their way to Paris, only to have their connecting flight cancelled. AS annoying as it was, “each cloud has a silver lining”, and this particular case, it meant a whole day they chose to visit us. We made the most of each other company, after lunch together at the mall, the girls went shopping, the boys back to the pool, we ended up with a bowling party to celebrate Caroline’s birthday on IMAGINE, before saying farewell for good this time!

Back to the bloat, Terry has a list of projects as long as his arm, and spends the first week organising contractors. In fact, there is so many things to go thru (big and small, but nothing that would stop us for cruising!), that I’ll devote a separate post to it. This may please the technically minded, and the “I’m-only-interested- in the- travel- stories” people can skip to the next post!

Fort Lauderdale, 13 Mai – 20 Mai, 2012

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
