Enjoying the US East Coast

Florida to New York - June 13 to August 13, 2012

I am either hopeless at time management or we have too many things happening. Let's use the latter as an excuse for being so far behind with the blog.
This post is by no means a detailed story, rather a quick update on the past 8 weeks, since leaving Fort Lauderdale.

We've sailed up the East coast, stopping in Cape Canaveral first, to visit the Kennedy Space Center. Making the most of the good weather, we then sailed (or rather motored) straight up to the Chesapeake Bay, for a few weeks of inside cruising. As a Steen cruise would not be complete without a big river expedition, we decided to explore the Potomac which provided us with more challenges than we expected (bridges, overhead power lines, strong currents,) but the prize at the end was really worth it: Washington D.C!!! The anchorage right in the middle of the city was a dream: free, calm, the best location for the July 4th fireworks, storm proof (we endured a very severe storm, without the boat even moving, while 13 million Virginia residents lost their power for days!), within minutes' walk to all the major sights, and best of all, opposite the very friendly Capital yacht Club which became our home for 2 weeks. After months of tropical living, everyone relished the change of pace and the opportunity to expand their brains, visiting countless museums and memorials. I knew the kid's enthusiasm for learning, but they surprised us by being so keen to go out every day, walking or biking around town. We all enjoyed ourselves so much, that even Terry considered leaving the boat at anchor here and hire a car to tour the rest of the country.

Eventually we moved north, back into the Chesapeake and its pretty shores, enjoying more yacht club hospitality in Solomon Island, a fabulous visit at the maritime museum in St Michael, numerous seafood dinners...coming out of Delaware Bay into the Atlantic Ocean again.

I can't comment much on the New Jersey coast, as we sailed past it overnight, heading for New York. Sailing into the harbor was one of these moments you've dreamt about for years, and when finally there, it's so exciting you try to hold on to this special time before you realise it's gone and "now what?" I can only describe New York City in one word: BUSY. From the countless ferries and barges to avoid on the Hudson River, to the yellow cabs and crowded sidewalks in Lower Manhattan, everything happens fast and furiously. There is energy which depending on your mood, can be invigorating or draining (ask Terry how he felt about it!). We spent the last 2 weeks of July anchored off the Upper West Side, with my brother and his daughter visiting from France: we all loved New York, except for Terry who is not fond of big cities and can't see beyond the traffic jams, overpriced shops, and rude shopkeepers. He started to breathe again when we left, sailing up the East River and into the more open waters of the Long Island sound. Stopping in places like Larchmont, Northport, Long beach, we followed the trail of hundreds of boats who made this area the cruising mecca of the North East. Luckily the weather was good as we continued north to Noank, Block Island and finally Newport.
Boston was to be the ultimate destination, where to drop off our guests. But with time running short and bad weather last week, we decided that Newport, Rhode Island, will be as far as we go. Safely moored inside the harbor, we've been enjoying walks around the many mansions, not mentioning the very stylish (and expensive) shops. We did spend a day in Boston, when driving our relatives to the airport: another city says Terry, who is very happy we didn't sail all the way around Cape Cod after all. Marc thought it looked like a mini-NYC, personally I found downtown Boston nicer to walk around with fewer high-rise and a "people friendly" waterfront.

So here we are, mid-august, having a 3-day break between guests: our French relatives left 2 days ago, Terry's daughters arrive tomorrow for a month. Our plans for the next 4 weeks? Go back to New York, the same way we came up (maybe different anchorages for variety?) We're all excited to have the company of course, though it means home schooling will be a challenge and the blog will probably be put on hold for a few weeks. In the meantime I may cheat and post some of Anne's journals, which she writes for her school, and update the photo albums. For these of you on Facebook, check the status and photos there, as it is often easier to post a picture and short comment there.

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
