On the american food trail

31 December 2012 | Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA
Voahangy
Fort Lauderdale, Dec 31th 2012

Well, our 7 months in the US of A are coming to an end. It’s been swell, as they say, and going back thru the various posts ( some are still unpublished, you’ll just have to be patient and then put up with out of sequence stories), I feel really fortunate that we managed to see so much and get a feeling for this big country. Nowhere else during our cruising life, have our trip been marked by the change of seasons and weather, local celebrations (Memorial Day, 4th July, Thanksgiving, Winter Holidays…) and let’s not forget the Presidential Election which lead up dominated most of the summer. For all its idiosyncrasies, we do love America, its scenery, its history, its people, even its food. Yes, as I alluded in my Washington post, there is more to American food than burger and fries; and with the boat filled with the holiday scent of cinnamon and sugar; I think it would be fitting for this last 2012 post, to take you along a food trail of the USA.

I can’t start without mentioning the famous hamburger which has been elevated to an art form at the Ram’s Head Tavern in Annapolis. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the Frenchy Burger: beef patty topped with brie, apple, ham, garlic aioli, onion crisps on a brioche.
Now that I have your attention, let’s keep with the iconic calorie laden stuff, like this hot dog in NYC, pizzas with the works in Mystic, CT, or a fried combo of fish and prawns at Disney World!

How about some “regional” dishes like steamed crabs in Washington DC, shrimp and grits in Charleston NC, rainbow trout in Shenandoah National Park VA, this massive plate of smoked ribs which serves 6 of us in Newport RI or this ultimate comfort food, fried chicken and waffle, found all over the southern states!

Love Asian food? There’s plenty to be found here, but the Americans can’t help themselves and they have to tweak with even the simplest dishes. Grilled garlic shrimp and crispy spinach in Fort Lauderdale FL, some jazzed up sushi roll in Annapolis MD.

And of course, there is dessert, sweet and sinly: cookies on the run in NYC, ice cream in Martha’s Vineyard, a mile-high blackberry cream pie in Shenandoah and a layered chocolate cake which passed for a Christmas log in Fort Lauderdale.

Finally, for these of you who may start thinking that we never ate at home, let me share some of my cooking experiments on board, trying to make the most of the local produce. Our favourite grilled lobster dish, followed by when terry got sick of grilled lobster. Then we fell in love with flank steak miso glazed and grilled with noodle salad, and my favourite salad Brussels sprout petals with cherry tomatoes and candied pecans has featured at least weekly on our menus during the holidays.

If this post tickled your tastebuds (or if the photos didn’t upload properly) there is more in the photo gallery. We are now several pounds heavier (surprise, surprise!), and probably will not have any deep fried food or burgers for a few weeks. Still, it’s been a lot of fun eating and our fridge and freezer are full of these items we may not find easily again (cranberries, good steaks, turkey sausages…)

Our last 7 weeks in Fort Lauderdale wrap up our American adventure when we will see the end of 2012 on the beach tonight. 2013 starts with us setting sail for Cuba on January 1st, goodbye comfort zone, hello exotica!!! Happy New Year to you all, enjoy and take care.

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
