New York Part 3 - "My New York" by Anne

My New York by Anne.

Ever since we left Australia last year, I have been waiting to go to New York. You know why? My neighbour Gabby told me about this store called American Girl Place, where you can buy a doll that looks just like you. So I saved all my pocket money, until we arrived there.

First, I had to wait a couple of days, because Mum and Dad wanted to walk around Broadway (that's the street that runs all the way down Manhattan). They always do that when we arrive in a new place; Mum wants to find where all the shops are first. She was happy because there are tons of them here!!! I liked Claire's the jewellery shop, the shelves are so tightly squeezed you can hardly move around the shop. Barnes and Nobles is a huge book and movie store next door, and I loved how you could play with an Ipad thing called a Nook, but it's only to read books with. Finally, we found Zabar's, it's a supermarket where the most fantastic food comes from: the food was fresh, they smoked their own salmon, sold cheese from all over the world, chocolate, freshly baked bread and roast chicken. We bought dinner there and things that would probably last us for a month.

Anyway, after we settled down, we walked to 5th avenue and I was so excited when we found the shop: it was 3 storeys high, all pink, with thousands of dolls, and you could select the hairstyle, the skin colour,etc...I picked a doll that looks like me, and I called her Desiree! I spent half of my money in July buying her outfits and getting her ears pierced. I had to save for 2 months afterwards so I could buy her a "sister" to keep her company. They now follow me everywhere!

Another shop I liked on 5th avenue, was Tiffany's and Co where we bought some earrings. It's a very expensive, fancy place. All the jewellery was either very big or very small, some had their own logo made out of gold or diamonds. The ladies lounge was super fancy, it had gold taps and 4 mirrors, with the ground and wall made out of marble. In case you don't know, the ladies lounge is American term for ladies bathroom.

My favourite attraction in NYC was Times Square: it's awesome, especially at night, with all the lights, musicians, and you get to see yourself on the big screen. There are also cool stores like the biggest Toys R Us in the world, and a huge M&M shop, where you can play a game of "which colour M&M are you?". Mine was MEGA-MIX, it said I believe too much of a good thing is a better thing. I also enjoyed the NHM, which is the same as in the movie "A night at the Museum", but I prefer the Washington one though, it had more dinosaurs and big animals.

It's really hard to choose a favourite place, because there is so much to see in New York. We walked for miles every day. I asked to ride my bike instead, but I was only allowed to ride in the parks and not in the city streets, because it was so crowded. Lucky we also took the subway a lot. I love riding the subway, it's so much fun swinging on the poles, and much faster than walking!

Oh, and I have to tell you about the food in New York. My favourite restaurant is called Blue Fin, in Times Square. We ate there for Dad's birthday, and it has the most comfortable lounges (the ones you sit on, not the toilet ones), cool music, and the best kids menu: yummy cheese macaroni and cheese, and ice cream sundae with loads of chocolate sauce! I think everyone else enjoyed their food: the salmon looked good, though I didn't try it. And don't forget Zabar's to pick up lunch!

I love New York, it's a fantastic place!

Le New York d'Anne.

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
