Off the Radar… for a while.

Puerto Aventuras, April 2013

I know this blog is getting further and further behind…to the point that Terry is wondering what is the point in investing so much time and effort for posting six months old updates. I wonder myself sometimes, as I sit writing yet another chapter in our sailing adventure.

As our last up-to-date update goes back to December last year (any post after that being catch-up), I thought I’d bring up another one to explain the 3-months silence. Don’t worry, nothing bad happened, quite the contrary. Our 2013 voyage started according to plan with a stopover in Cuba (which you can find the pictures of in the gallery; it will take a bit longer to publish the posts). We continued on to Isla Mujeres, off the Mexican east coast, intending to spend 2 or 3 weeks leisurely exploring the Yucatan region. This time, it wasn’t Mother Nature who disturbed the plans, rather the children’s call for a pause in the adventure.

No sooner had we cleared into Mexico that we settled in Puerto Aventuras, the only sheltered marina along the Riviera Maya. Located 85 kilometers south of Cancun and, it is the ideal place to stay and leave the boat while travelling inland. How did we know to come here? Our friends Christy and Joe had stumbled on this gated resort a few years ago and ended up staying for 2 years. They had nothing but praise for the people and the facilities, so to quote Christy “it was a no brainer”. We were lucky to have them warn their friends in advance so we had a small welcoming committee on arrival, always appreciated in a foreign country. Marc made friends immediately (thanks to Cassie and Juliana’s connections) and after 2 days, asked why we couldn’t stay here for 2 years, just like the Boyles did. Anne followed suit, after discovering she could ride her bike everyday to the dolphin pool close by. It wasn’t a crew mutiny as such, more like a gradual mood shift for the better, and the mutual understanding that after 18 months of non-stop cruising maybe travel fatigue had set in and it was time for a pause. It took Terry and I a long time to come around (managed to get away with a “Maybe…” for nearly 2 months!), always thinking of a reason why we could not stay: we don’t speak Spanish, we’re in a cyclone region, it will cost a fortune in marina fees, can’t see ourselves doing home school tied up to a Mexican dock for a year,…and finding there were solutions to every problems. The marina is extremely safe and secure, approved as a hurricane hole by most insurance companies (it’s not to say we’re totally sheltered from a cyclone though!), docking fees are the cheapest we’ve seen so far at $28 per day, and the best part must be the bilingual school located within the resort which caters for the local community as well as passing travellers like us. I was personally won over when I found out that Marc and Anne could attend Colegio Puerto Aventuras and socialise with other students while still continuing with their Australian Distance Ed program. That meant that Terry would have his wife back while the kids were at school. Win-win for all! Add to the mix the low cost of living, the ever present sunshine, resort-like atmosphere mixing with transients from all over the world, exotic Mexican food and the realisation that, off all the places we’ve visited, Puerto Aventuras ticked all the boxes for us to stay! And did I mention that the kids are the happiest they’ve been in 6 months?

So that’s how the last two months have passed. A mix of touring sights at first, in case we didn’t stay long; finding our bearings locally, once we found out we would. Home schooling has been a big part of our daily routine, followed lately by socialising with new found friends for all of us. Next week will be the start of a new routine with Marc and Anne joining the school until the end of the year. Yes, you’ve read correctly. We’re committed to stay until Christmas! And now that the decision is made, we’re all looking forward to the change.

And as for the blog? Originally designed as a travel diary, it seems to have evolved into a collection of different kind of stories. I found that I love writing about our “atypical” life, comparing it to putting away precious memories to enjoy later when we can no longer travel. I have dozens of tales in the making, all a month or two (or six) behind, hardly what you’d call updates and I apologise in advance if any of you get confused. But with our cruising schedule on hold, I like to think that the pressure is off, and I can carry on at my own pace. So if you’ll bear with me, I’ll keep posting. The adventure continues…

Silence radio…temporaire.

Puerto Aventuras, Avril 2013

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
