Annapolis Boat Show

20 April 2013 | Puerto Aventuras, Mexico
Voahangy
Annapolis, Sept 20 - Oct 20, 2012

We deliberately by-passed Annapolis when we sailed thru the Chesapeake in June, knowing it would be our main spot on our way back south. Two reasons for that: first was to visit the Boyle family, our long lost cruising friends, and second, was to prepare the boat which we had agreed to lend to Lagoon for display at the 2012 Annapolis Boat Show.

I already hear some of you asking what on earth possessed us to do something like that, and as I was packing some of the (many) boxes of "stuff" off the boat, I was wondering the same thing...Well, we've always had a good relationship with the shipyard, and when we were asked back in May, if a) we'd be in the Annapolis region for the fall, b) we'd consider have the boat on display at the show; it seemed natural for us to say yes. As they say: it sounded like a good idea at the time.
To be fair, we were happy to help out and Lagoon offered quite a bit in exchange: detailing, show passes, accommodation while off the boat...So it was a win-win all around.

It should have been a piece of cake: we thought we'd clear all the clutter off the benches, store everything in the bilges and cupboards, and generally tidy up. We are a family cruising boat after all. Well, that's not what Lana Lohe, from Lagoon America, had in mind. Lana is the most adorable and friendly person we could ever meet; she is also very professional, and takes her role extremely seriously as the Sales and Marketing Coordinator for Lagoon in the USA (she is the point of contact for all dealers in the US, and reports to the French head office) So when the time came to confirm what needed to be done, she was politely ruthless: take out as much as you can, leave some bilges and cupboards empty, turn off your fridges and freezers...Please. Off course, it all made sense: potential customers want to see how big the storage areas are, you don't want to have your cold fridge opened 20 times a day (and the world to comment on your eating habits!), and people have been known to steal (why? I can't work out, but apparently it happens). So, with 4 days before the handover, the clean-up turned into the mammoth task of packing over 20 boxes off the boat (Anne wins the prize for having the largest amount of junk, it's amazing how many toys, books and trinkets you can fit in the forward port cabin!). It was just like moving house, except that was only half of it. The rest somehow fitted under the beds and the lounges, or was disposed of. At this point, I must give a huge credit to the Boyles, without whom none of this could have happened. Joe and Christy generously offered half of their garage as storage space, in addition to free use of their dock in Edgewater. We are also forever grateful to them for the heated spa and the evening drinks. Or was it the evening drinks in the heated spa? Whatever, it was very much appreciated after days of heavy lifting.

VOAHANGY was left with Lagoon for 2 weeks: the first week was mostly for detailing and fixing whatever was necessary so the boat would display well, the second week was the annual show itself, from Oct 2 to Oct 7. We actually took off on a road trip for a few days, while Lana Lohe looked after everything. She is so efficient and thorough; we could not have met a better person to take care of our boat.

We returned to Annapolis towards the end of the show, not wanting to miss what is known as the oldest and the largest in-water boat show in the world. It was a busy time: meeting with David Farrington and Yann Masselot of the Lagoon team, keen to know our impressions (Terry is always full of good technical advice), checking out the latest nautical gadgets ( I came soooo close to buy a set of walkie-talkie for us to use while docking, so we'd stop yelling at each other, but Terry wouldn't have any of it..."we don't need it, we just have to be better organised!" that's my captain.) Our boat stood proudly at the Lagoon stand, with by-standers making appointments to step on board. It didn't look or feel like home though: Lagoon's marketing team had stepped in with their own props, linen and decorations, so that you'd think it came out of the Lagoon brochure. I realised then the reason why Lana did not want us to leave any personal items in the open: besides the risk of breakage and theft, it didn't fit with the corporate image! We're not complaining though, far from it: I finally took these mess- free pictures of our interior I'd wanted for so long! And had a chuckle when visitors asked us how we could possibly travel around the world with so few belongings. If only they knew...

The timing of the boat show also meant that we ran into a few cruisers who followed the same path as ours. Some were last seen in the Canaries a year ago (EYE CANDY and EGRET), some more recently in Washington DC (FLIPPER and ENDEAVOUR), others we found out months later they were here but missed them (CAJOU and GADJO). I never cease to be amazed at how small the cruising world is: here we were, not expecting to see each other again, yet, brought together with this single event. Anne certainly was happy to see her friend Lucia one more time, and the ensuing unexpected play dates proved a godsend when Terry and I had to attend meetings (thank you Monica!).

When the boat was eventually returned to us, at the end of the show, it was back to Edgewater to collect our boxes and move back in. The first two days were a mad rush as we were expecting our Australian friend Phil to come and stay with us for a week. Then he cancelled at the last minute due to ill health, which was a bummer initially, but turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We originally had planned on a week of cruising around the Chesapeake with Phil, eating and drinking, but as we all felt sick with the flu and freshly-back-from-Australia Marc had school work to catch up with, we decided to stay put at Zia's dock (affectionately named after the Boyle's previous catamaran). It was a leisurely week, spent rearranging the boat (inspired by the clutter-free look at the show, we embarked on a massive culling exercise), recovering from our first bout of illness since leaving Australia (not used to cool nights any longer I'm afraid) and generally chilling out with our friends. The kids got a chance to reacquaint again after 6 years, both families catching up for curry nights, pizza nights, drinks by the fire or sunset on deck...In Marc's opinion, this is the best aspect of cruising: make friends, hang out, and have a semblance of normal life

Add a few sightseeing trips into downtown Annapolis (a 20mn drive from Edgewater) and this is how the month went by. I can't believe we spent all this time here! The change in the foliage has been a reminder that autumn is well and truly upon us, and while we love to watch the green trees turning flaming orange, we also know it's time to watch the weather and prepare ourselves to head south. Can't think of a better place to wait for a weather window though!

Annapolis, 20 Septembre - 20 Octobre, 2012

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
