Summer 2022
11 July 2022 | Rhodes Greece
Dierk and Sabrina | Hot and windy
Here we are, Sam and I, traversing the skies again to the far side of the earth in an A380 bound for Greece. Stella Mia is in Rhodes, an island in the Dodecanese island group located in the southern Aegean Sea, where she has rested on her hardstand for almost three years. I reflect on these previous years, going back to 2013 where we have been so very fortunate to sail from Barcelona Spain in the west to the Dardanelles leading through the Sea of Marmara to Istanbul in the east. Many thousands of nautical miles.
We have been blessed to share our adventures with family and friends, not to mention the people and exposure to many differing cultures on the way, many often in remote places. Who was to think that it would all come to a grinding halt after the European summer of 2019. The effects of the Covid-19 Sars outbreak has undoubtedly changed the world forever. Not only the virus itself, but the after affects leading to immense strain on health systems, logistics, education, relationships.....and now inflationary pressures coupled in part due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. It is painfully evident that the world we live in is indeed a global village and there is no one or nothing that is exempt from these pressures. Family and relationships are so important for the support of each other during these uncertain times and there is always hope, however that is perceived to be.
This year will involve much needed repairs and maintenance to the boat. When she is back in the water we intend to visit southern Turkey again, leave the Aegean Sea and head back into the Ionian Sea toward Corfu and Albania. We would love for our friends and family to follow our path. This blog has been written from day 1 in 2013 until now, and it highlights the good bits and the not so good bits of sailing a yacht in unfamiliar waters....so enjoy and feel free to contribute. Both Sabrina and I hope that this gives a bit of comic relief to your day. It certainly won't win a Pulitzer....but who cares, so long as we all get a bit of something out of it.
