The Beast From The East and Storm Emma
01 March 2018
The Beast from the East: has caused total chaos in the UK. I was due to fly from Faro to Gatwick this evening for a visit with my Mum and son, returning on Monday. After much debate, agonising and looking at BBC Weather News, I decided to cancel my visit. Heavy snow, icy conditions and a minus 12 wind chill does not work for any of us so reluctantly the decision was made. Fortunately my mum was pleased as she didn't want me travelling to UK and possibly getting stuck, nor did she want her grandson travelling from the Isle of Wight as the rail network was in turmoil.
Storm Emma: well its not all blue skies and sunshine here in Lagos either. We have watched the barometer plummeting from 1028 to 982 in the space of 24 hours!! This morning we had 45 knots of wind roaring through the marina with Stiletto healing over onto the pontoon, the cutlery drawer flying open and a full lemonade bottle flying across the galley. Torrential rain most of yesterday, during the night and throughout today combined with a stupendous thunder storm and a bible black sky has made us all feel very flat here. I took a walk down to the harbour entrance to see the effects of Emma on the ocean. What I saw was staggering. A huge sea with a 7m swell which is extremely rare here. Massive waves and an exceptionally high spring tide meant the road by the old harbour was under water. The swell was so great an iron man hole cover had been lifted and was lying 6 inches from where it should have been. A couple of locals that I got chatting to said they had never seen anything like it for a very very long time.
Song for this post : I have 2 today ......... Let It Snow by Dean Martin and Riders On The Storm by The Doors
