The plain which runs between Pythagorio and Metalini once full of tobacco has now given way to olive groves. During the late 19th and early 20th century tobacco cultivation spread rapidly on the island. It was then exported to the Greek cigarette factories in Egypt, Africa and Asia. At the same time, local cigarette factories in the port of Vathy were built.
