Mainland Greece - Peloponnese - Astrous

08 December 2023
Jane Paulson
A short hop along the coast for just 11nm brought us to Astrous. A lovely town with beautiful beaches and the cleanest water in Greece.

We tied up in the port but made the mistake of tying up behind an active fishing boat. It's very amusing to see cats rock up out of nowhere, on arrival of a fishing boat, and sit patiently on the quay waiting for the odd fish to be thrown in their direction.

Overnight, we had a visitor who peed over one of our cockpit cushions and the smell was horrendous and almost impossible to get rid of. Lesson learnt. Keep away from fishing boats!!!!!

High on the hill is the ruin of the Castle of Astros, built in 1256. Initially it was called Castella de la Estella (star castle) due to the peninsula’s asteroid shape. It was almost squared shaped, had gates was almost impenetrable. The remaining wall is 6m in height. From the quayside, looking up, it looked like a real workout to get up to it. Actually it wasn't anywhere near as bad as we first thought and the view was spectacular. Well worth the effort.
