Nisos Spetses

07 August 2024
Jane Paulson
When we visit Aunt Koula in Porto Khelli, we sit on her terrace and look across to the beautiful island of Spetses – the Monte Carlo of Greece .

We circumnavigated the island two years ago, just for the day, with cousin Joyce and have always said we would return. The harbours however are very crowded and we decided that in order to see the old harbour and new town we would take the ferry across and spend the day exploring. When we eventually get to leave Kilada we will sail there and explore the many anchorages in Stiletto.

No private cars are allowed within the town limits. The most common modes of transport are walking, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles. Simple. Only taxis and delivery vehicles are allowed in the downtown area.
Consequently, there is a calm everywhere you go .

Ferries and high speed hydrofoils arrive regularly from the Athenian port of Piraeus and there is a vehicle/passenger ferry from Kosta on the mainland and numerous very fast water taxis from Porto Khelli.

We took the vehicle/passenger ferry - Katerina Star - across, the cost was €8 (£6.80) for both of us and a passenger only ferry back again also €8 for both of us. Travel time 6 minutes.

Despite the heat, we had a good wander around. Andreas slowly got himself back into “photo mode" and took loads of pics. We visited the museum and finished with supper in a traditional family run taverna.

My thought for the day:
I feel like I should want more, but I don't. I want less. Less stuff, less rushing, less stress, less noise. I want simplicity.
