Comparison Essay: Cuttyhunk and Farmer's Cay

09 June 2010 | Cuttyhunk
Hannah
Just about a month ago, we were in warm and sunny Farmer's Cay in the Bahamas. Now we are exploring small, quaint New England islands such as Cuttyhunk. Farmer's Cay and Cuttyhunk are different in Many ways, though they do have a few things in common.

One difference between Cuttyhunk and Farmer's Cay is the temperature. Cuttyhunk was cold and windy while Farmer's Cay was hot and sweaty. We wore long pants and fleeces in Cuttyhunk, but shorts and short sleeve shirts in Farmer's Cay. In Farmer's Cay, we went snorkeling and spearfishing and speared grouper. We were not having grouper fingers in Cuttyhunk! The beach in Farmer's Cay had fine, white sand and no rocks, while the beach in Cuttyhunk was half boulders and half course, brown sand. In Cuttyhunk, people drive around in golf carts because of the narrow roads, but in Farmer's Cay regular cars and trucks are used. We had to use our Danforth anchor in Cuttyhunk because of the muddy bottom while in Farmer's Cay, our regular spade anchor held well because of the sandy bottom.

The two islands also have a few things in common. For example, Farmer's Cay and Cuttyhunk have very friendly locals, who are willing to share with you. In Farmer's Cay, we were invited to a nice lunch after a church service. In Cuttyhunk, a man gave us a tour around the island in his golf cart and showed us around his garden and house. The grocery stores on both islands have only the basics and have supply boats that bring food once a week. Farmer's Cay and Cuttyhunk are also both quiet islands with not a lot going on.

Farmer's Cay, Bahamas and Cuttyhunk, MA are two islands that are very different in many ways. They are also surprisingly similar considering that they are over one thousand miles apart. I am lucky enough to have been to both.
