Stuck in Paradise
03 December 2012 | Warderick Wells, Exuma
We have been in the Exuma Land and Sea Park for nearly a week while we wait out the strong NE winds. We always love coming here. The stark beauty is unparalled, the water gin clear teeming with wildlife and, at least in the past, we have made good friends here.
On the other hand, there are no "facilities" here --- there is a small park ranger's office where you can swap used books to read, rent old DVDs and buy small amounts of internet time using their satellite connection. Hiking, swimming and snorkeling are the main activities available to us. Of course, that does not include attending to the ever-growing list of 'fixing things in paradise.' We try to fix at least one thing per day to maintain this fairly complex vessel. We call it "putting points in the black box." So when we are in a tight spot hopefully we can draw on some our banked "points" to get us out of deep do-do.
We are pretty self sufficent though and grateful that we can make our own water, generate power from various alternative energy sources and treat our own sewage onboard. We have plenty of food and have been careful to ration out the fresh produce, but we are getting kind of low about now in that regard.
To pass some of the time we have been teaching Kai to stand watch. After all he has to pull his own weight or overboard he goes....shark fodder. Just kidding! So here is a picture of him practicing helming. Now if we can just teach him to turn around and face forward we'll be good to go....
