Winter Quarters

We found the marina at Riposto to be relatively new with good facilities and close to the town. The cost for overwintering is reasonable and we are close to Catania airport, so we decided to leave Summertime there for the winter. We will have to hope Etna stays quiet for the next 6 months as Riposto [...]

Avignon to Port St. Louis du Rhone

The River Rhone relented and did not rise above the level of the quay on the night of 10/11th October. The next day the level began to fall and the rate of flow abate. We decided to leave early yesterday, the 16th October for Port St. Louis. The trip was over 80 kms with two locks but with a favourable stream, in places reached over 4 knots, we were able to cover the distance in under 8 hours. Frustratingly we were held up at the last lock for 2 hours but finally docked in salt water at 5.30 pm. We have arrived at the Mediterranean Sea!

Tomorrow we will make the short trip to Port Napoleon where we hope to find our mast and boom. We will then decide on the arrangements for the winter and assess what repairs are necessary in readiness for next year. It's been a great trip, challenging and tiring at times but what a way to see France. However we are pleased to be back in salt water and the wide open spaces of the sea, with blue water instead of brown!

We left the Isle of Wight on 4th July, so the trip took 105 days. We covered 871 nautical miles, 958 statute miles and travelled on 4 major rivers, the Seine, Marne, Saone and the Rhone and 2 major canals. We negotiated a total of 191 locks of varying size, the deepest took us down 23 metres the shallowest 0.5. Frankly we won't mind if we don't see a lock again.
