summertime goes south

25th June: Livorno to Cala dei Medici Rosignans
With the assistance of the mooring staff at Livorno we arranged for an engineer to repair the fridge. We had to travel to a marina at a small village 10 miles to the south where he would visit on Saturday 27th. We set off mid-morning and had a nice sail until the wind died. We anchored outside the marina for lunch, finally arriving mid-afternoon. The engineer duly arrived as arranged and took half an hour to locate and fix the fault in the power supply. The fridge itself was fine and the cost very modest.
Cala dei Medici is very peaceful after the bustle and discomfort of Livorno, which is not geared up for yachts but has plenty of commercial shipping. Casting off, I joked to Linda that at least one of the ships would also cast-off but was proved wrong. As we left the inner harbour two tugs were taking position, obviously waiting for inbound traffic. In the event three ships were queuing to enter so we had to play chicken with their bows at the entrance. We let two go by and sneaked out ahead of the third.
Cala dei Medici is a very well-appointed marina next to a small village. Our three days were enough to exhaust all the possibilities of the village and marina. It did give us a chance to make some minor repairs and provision for the trip to Elba some 30 miles away.
