summertime goes south

30th June: Cala Canelle to Cala Garera, Promontoro Argentario
After two long days we planned a short trip back to the mainland. We spent a lazy morning in the lovely bay, cooling down with a swim as the day got hotter. We set off at three and arrived at Cala Garera tucked in behind the Promontoro Aegentario. The promontory is high with steep sides dropping down to the sea. A number of the lower hills have fortified towers on their summits. The marina, along with an attractive fishing village with the unattractive name of Grotte, lie in a natural harbour surrounded by wooded hills with the mass of the mountains of the promontory providing a stunning backdrop. The hills have large forts on their tops showing that the attractions of the area needed strong defences in the days of marauding pirates.
We had dinner in the sole marina restaurant and, due entirely to our ignorance of the Italian for squid, we both involuntary ordered a whole fried squid for our main course. Neither of us can abide squid, so to save the embarrassment of returning our dinners uneaten, Linda's handbag soon accommodated 2 squid. We disposed the squid on the way home and if anyone has a remedy for fishy handbags, please let Linda know.
