summertime goes south

14th Sept.-Cefalu to Porto di Ponente, Isola Vulcano, Aeolian Islands
Vulcano is the southernmost Aeolian Isle, 50 miles from Cefalu. We left Cefalu at 7 am and arrived in the beautiful and sheltered anchorage around 5.30 pm. Light winds meant a motor sail but we were glad to be at sea after staying longer in Cefalu than intended.
There are 7 main islands in the group, all of volcanic origin with 2 remaining active, Stromboli and Vulcano (the origin of the word volcano). We are anchored under the crater where we can see smoke rising. Ashore there is a strong smell of sulphur and rather disgusting hot mud baths. These seem popular judging by the numbers of people willing to immerse themselves. They are efficacious in helping many common and uncommon ailments, ranging from rheumatism to broken bones (at least according to the notices at the pay desk). As a confirmed sceptic I have doubts.
What is not in doubt though is the beauty of the islands, combining green cultivated areas with stark formations of rocks and solidified lava thrown up from the sea bed by past eruptions. We plan to spend a few days exploring the islands, always providing the weather holds and absent further eruptions.
