Winter Quarters
We found the marina at Riposto to be relatively new with good facilities and close to the town. The cost for overwintering is reasonable and we are close to Catania airport, so we decided to leave Summertime there for the winter. We will have to hope Etna stays quiet for the next 6 months as Riposto [...]
Siren Song

18th Sept. Lipari to Isola Salina
We took the short trip to Salina. The island has distinctive twin peaks and is exceptionally green and heavily cultivated. We stayed on the eastern side in the the harbour attached to the main settlement. We had an excellent meal in one of the few restaurants in the small village which has one church and one main street. It was very quiet and our friendly waitress said she was relieved that the main tourist season was over and the island had returned to its usual peaceful state.
Salina is identified by some, as the island of the Sirens. The beauty of their song which no mortal could resist, lured passing sailors to their doom on the rocky shore. The demi-God Circe warned Odysseus of the danger and urged the to use beeswax to block the ears of his crew so they could not hear the Siren song. Odysseus himself was eager to experience the their song so Circe suggested he had himself tied to the mast, with the crew under orders to ignore his entreaties to release him until well past the island. The ploy worked and Odysseus sailed on towards the Straits of Messina where the twin monsters of Scylla and Charybdis awaited him.
The island is certainly an enticing place and only a few miles from the Straits, but during our short stay the Sirens song remained silent.
