Thursday- Transit Day 1
10 December 2009 | Panama- Panama City to Colon (the Canal) via Gatun Lake
Mostly sunny, very warm, light breeze, land and sea
Well the much anticipated transit day is here. The ACP advisor came on board at Balboa Yacht Club close to schedule at 7:15 AM and to our delight it was Victor, the same gentleman that was with us when we acted as line handlers for some friends on another cat a few months ago. Our scheduled time to be at the first set of locks, Miraflores, was 8:40 AM. Arrived with just the right amount of time to spare and everthing went very smoothly at these two locks and the next lock at Pedro Miguel. The locks on the Pacific side when transiting north (to the Atlantic) are up locks and the most turbulence from water entering the locks for us was here. Fortunately we had an experienced crew of sailors aboard to help, Dave and Cindy Nauman from CMCS (our sailing club back home) and Steve Olive (the kids sailing coach from ESC also back home). All day today we were center tied and there was a small cruise ship, Discovery, side tied ahead of us and three tugboats rafted together behind. We were able to spend the night at moored in Gatun Lake which broke the trip up into two days making it more leisurely. Gatun Lake is the result from the damming of the Chagres River which feeds the Canal.
