Monday- Welcome to the Trade Winds
18 January 2010 | Panama- Isla Linton to Porvenir in the San Blas Islands
Mostly sunny, very warm, strong breeze, northerly
We wanted to get all the way to Porvenir in the San Blas islands some 40 miles and today was the first break we saw in the winds and the waves for over a week so we got an early start. There was a chance that the trade winds could change direction even ever so slightly which we not allow us to sail through the what were expected to be 8 foot seas. As it turned out the seas were only about 6 feet, the wind was blowing from a favorable direction at an average of 20 knots so we made good time and cut through the waves with at a speed of about 7 knots. Glad we had put 2 reefs in the main and were only flying our small heads sail because at times we hit a speed of 9 knots. For you non-boaters we were pretty much flying over the tops of the waves. John was in his element and spent the entire trip in the cockpit even though the whole boat would occasionally get doused with a good spray of salt water. Let's just say I felt as if I was on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyworld. Set anchor at Porvenir by 2:30 pm after picking our way through several reefs. It's a sand spit of an island with the port captain, immigration and police offices as well as an airstrip, motel, restaurant and convenience store. Not much but a necessary stop to check into the area with the officials. A little after dark a fish flopped onto our deck which is about 5-1/2 feet out of the water and we were encouraged that the actual catching would be good here.
