Wednesday- Our First Kuna Village
19 January 2010 | Panama- Isla Wichubhuala, San Blas
Mostly sunny, very warm, moderate breeze, northerly
Took a half mile field trip in the dinghy today over to the next island for supplies, turned out all we wanted from the selection was beer and gas. This is the first Kuna Indian village we have visited. Similar to the American Indian tribes in the USA these Indians have sovereign land inside of Panama. They have retained the most traditional culture and traditions of all the Indians in all of the Americas. They are also a matriarchal society with the "husband" moving into his mates home signaling a union. Only the pigmy tribes are smaller in stature. The men all dress in western clothing but most of the women still dress traditionally in a two-color (black and bright accent) pattern wrap skirt, contrasting pattern colorful balloon sleeve blouse with molas attached to the front, a gold ring in their nose and beaded "leg" bracelets which look like feet-less socks.
Everything belongs to the tribe communally, there is no individual wealth. The village was very simple, all homes were one room huts built with stick walls, hatch roofs little furniture and hammocks to sleep. They all seemed so happy and caring for one another it makes you wonder what we actually need to be there, although I'm not ready to give up my more enclosed boat home I miss the other creature comforts and possessions of my old land life less and less every day.
