Monday- Hitting the Big City
01 February 2010 | Panama- Green Island to Nargana
Partly sunny, very warm, moderate breeze, northerly
This is island hopping at it's best with stops available every few miles. Today we moved 9 miles to the big city for groceries, my guess 500 residents at most. Nargana is reportedly the most Western town in all of Kuna Yala (San Blas); some buildings are made of cement, the women dress in regular clothes and there are television antennas everywhere. Their bathrooms sit in small huts over the water and you guessed it have a hole in the floor where your "stuff" goes. The discouraging thing is that they tend to throw their trash out the back door which means it literally goes into the pristine water. We have also started hearing rumors from other cruisers that locals are fishing out the area and don't pay much attention to the shellfish ban during early spring. Maybe someday soon they will wake up and save this beautiful environment. Saw our first Colombian trading boat here today, quite the vessel; power boat about 50 feet long with two decks above water and a tiller for steering!
