Saturday- Off for Some Serious Mola Shopping
20 February 2010 | Panama- East Lemon Cays to Gunboat
Mostly sunny, very warm, moderate breeze, northerly
Joan from Panchita and I have been planning a mola shopping trip for some months now, and since we are finally together again it's time so both boats are heading to the heart of mola land! Gunboat is a lone little picture perfect island a easy 3 mile dinghy trip in Panchita's large tender from some of the most acclaimed mola makers in Kuna Yala. Just drop the hook and Lisa, an infamous local transvestite and master mola maker, comes along side to sell her wares. Although I've heard there are a few better craftspeople in the area I buy one from her for $20, a steal for the work that goes into these works of fabric art. I've mentioned before that molas are what this area is known for worldwide and are a combination of applique, reverse applique and embroidery all very intricately hand sewn.
