Sunday- First Day Outside the US
16 December 2007 | Ensenada, Mexico
Clear, cold
Found the local Catholic Church for mass this morning and it is apparently is the center of the diocese as a bishop was saying mass. The building was very grand with wonderful stained glass windows and marble surfaces everywhere. They had begun their nativity scene which was quite elaborate and took up an entire corner near the altar.
We spent the rest of the day walking around the tourist and non-tourist shopping areas of the city. There don't appear to be any "shopping malls" to consolidate the shops as we're used to so they seem to go on forever. The monetary conversion factor is about 11 pesos to 1 dollar and the prices seem fairly comparable to the US for most things, cowboy boots and RX drugs are some exceptions (they are significantly cheaper).
There is a huge fresh fish market a few blocks from the boat and I expect it will be the source of many meals for us during our stay. The fish is unbelievably fresh and very reasonably priced. Across the way are lots of fish taco stands where the staff calls to you for your business. Ensenada is the where the fish taco originated and I'm sure before we leave we will give in to one of the vendors calls.
