Thursday- Valentine's Day with the Whales

14 February 2008 | Mexico- Laguna San Ignacio
Cloudy, cool, moderate wind
Got up today we thought early today for our adventure when Norma offered up that we may have crossed a time line. Hurried through our bacon and eggs, prepared lunch to go and dressed in 25 minutes flat, thankfully the panga boat was a little late. As we waited on deck for them to arrive we remarked that it was not the typical French restaurant Valentine's Day date we were embarking on. The ride to the lagoon was fast and a bit bumpy and about ten miles south of the anchorage, once there we were picked up by another boat for the whale tour.

All I can say is it was awesome, pictures and words cannot express how large and gentle they were. The baby whales were most inquisitive, coming close enough for several people on the boat to pet them. Mother whales would stand straight up with their heads out of the water ("spy hopping") to look for their baby, sometimes even getting between the baby and the boat if they felt the baby was staying too close. Several times the whales went directly under the boat, a little disconcerting at first. It was truly an event of a lifetime. Our new friends from Wildflower came by for cocktails, dinner and to exchange photos of the day's event, I expect we will see them again as we are both heading into the Sea of Cortez.

Vessel Name: Sunbow
Vessel Make/Model: Chris White Design Atlantic 46 LR Catamaran
Hailing Port: Fort Myers, FL
Crew: John Kremski & Sharon Del Bianco
About:
Although mid-westerners by birth we call the southwest gulf coast of Florida our "home port". John has been sailing since he was six while Sharon is a novice by comparision with only 17 years behind a boat wheel. [...]
Extra: We started cruising full time in November of 2007. It was a rough start with lots of adjustments but after about 2 years we got our "sea legs" for the lifestyle. It´s hard now to imagine any other home than being in Sunbow on the water.

The definition of a "sunbow" is ...... a rainbow-like display of colors resulting from refraction of sunlight through a spray of water...rainbow, moonbow & sunbow!
