Sail all day, Motor all night

04 December 2008 | 60 Miles west of Mazatlan, Southern Crossing, Sea of Cortez, Mexico
John
Left Ensenada del Muertos yesterday morning early, very nice sail all day long. Come evening, the wind dies out and we motor, motor, motor. Figured out how to use the radar plotter, which automatically tracks ships on the radar and figures out their heading, speed, closest point of approach and time to closest approach. Very handy feature, avoid things that go CLUNK in the night.

"Summer Passage Weather" this morning says east winds (right from the direction we want to go) so we are hoping he is wrong - but not likely! Looks like we will arrive Mazatlan just after dark unless the wind shifts dramatically so we can sail instead of motor - its about twice as fast.

Tuesday- Nowhere in Paradise

02 December 2008 | Mexico (BCS)- Muertos Cove
Partly cloudy, very warm, gentle to moderate breeze, northerly
Made it down to Muertos by late afternoon, put the dinghy in the water and went to "the" restaurant on shore. It was quite nice and had a free internet computer with calls to the USA! Got to bed early for tomorrow is our first overnight passage with just us two on this boat. When we were in this anchorage last spring we were the only boat, today there are about 20 guess it's season.

Monday- On the Way Across

01 December 2008 | Mexico (BCS) - Caleta Lobos near La Paz
Partly cloudy, warm, light breeze, northerly
Hauled anchor and headed out of La Paz bound for the mainland, not sure we want to leave the Baja. Stopped just a few miles out of the channel at one of the last anchorages available before a long day down the Baja coast to where we can jump off for Mazatlan on the mainland. We left the dinghy tied to the stern so we were able to take a ride around the new anchorage and saw some coral heads and tropical fish which was a little surprising.

Friday- Music on the Beach

28 November 2008 | Mexico (BCS)- La Paz at El Mogote Anchorage
Cloudy, warm, gentle breeze, northerly
Bobby Jo and Roger from Hipnautical were gracious enough to schedule a beach concert where they played their wonderful music. The parodies that they created for our "Blowin' in the Wind" party in Puerto Don Juan this fall as the aftermath of a hurricane brought 4 days of Santa Anna winds through confining us all to our boats were the biggest hits. The only communication with the others in the anchorage during that time was via VHF radio so one of the cruisers got pretty inventive with party planning as you may recall my reporting.

Thursday- Thanksgiving

27 November 2008 | Mexico (BCS)- La Paz at El Mogote Anchorage
Cloudy, warm, gentle breeze, northerly
Thanksgiving is a day to talk with loved ones, eat a big meal and be thankful for all our blessings. We were able to all today so it was a good day. The local cruiser's club coordinates a large feast at one of the marinas and this year 250 people came together. Club Cruceros provides the turkey and cranberry sauce, the marina does table and chairs, the cruiser's do all the trimmings and God provided the good will.
Vessel Name: Sunbow
Vessel Make/Model: Chris White Design Atlantic 46 LR Catamaran
Hailing Port: Fort Myers, FL
Crew: John Kremski & Sharon Del Bianco
About:
Although mid-westerners by birth we call the southwest gulf coast of Florida our "home port". John has been sailing since he was six while Sharon is a novice by comparision with only 17 years behind a boat wheel. [...]
Extra: We started cruising full time in November of 2007. It was a rough start with lots of adjustments but after about 2 years we got our "sea legs" for the lifestyle. It´s hard now to imagine any other home than being in Sunbow on the water.

The definition of a "sunbow" is ...... a rainbow-like display of colors resulting from refraction of sunlight through a spray of water...rainbow, moonbow & sunbow!
