Quiet Anchorage

11 May 2010 | Staniel Key
We arrived In Georgetown on May 7, and Sean and Gene had to leave us there on the 8th. It was sad that they had to leave when there is so much good cruising ahead but both had other places they had to be. We planned to stay about 4-5 days in Georgetown, but there was a really bad forecast and we didn't want to be stuck there for weeks, so after a couple of days hanging out in Georgetown Exuma, we sailed out early Monday May 10 for Galliot Cut.

We anchored at Galliot which was awesome snorking, crystal water, clear heads, a gorgeous private anchorage, pristine beach - our first totally private corner of heaven (no visible boats) since the VIS. It was still calm then. The wind cranked up overnight so we skimmed on up to Staniel on the banks side. We were doing 9 knots in 6 foot water and this can be its own kind of thrill! Everything was so whipped up we had to anchor at Big Majors. The current is amazing here - we actually saw current waterfalls pouring between rocks with over 6 inch drop. Luckily we were able to pick up a mooring at Thunderball at near low for a morning and had the caves to ourselves since no one else wanted to be out in the wind/current. Thunderball Cave is spectacular- millions of fish of all kids from big snappers and groupers to myriads of tropical fish like queen triggers. They are protected so that's why there are so many. The cave is a completely hollowed out island so you go in one way and there is sunlight streaming through other openings - really cool. We walked around town - it's is really changed from the winding dirt paths but still quaint. Jim got a kick out of the stupid swimming hogs who rushed out hoping for handouts and tried to climb in the dinghy..... ugh
