We slid out of Opunuhu Bay (photo) with the last light at about 6:30pm with no wind as the bay is on the leeward side of Moorea. Two other boats had left earlier in the evening with the same destination. The breeze filled in once we were about 7 miles offshore and built to a brisk 17-22 knots from behind. The off watch was rousted out twice within two hours to reef the main and slow the boat down. Since the transit is only 85 miles, and entering a pass through the reef in a strange island at night is stupid, we pulled hard on the reins. Even with just a double reefed main Surprise still managed to dance and surf, running 9-10 knots in the gusts and squalls. We passed both of the other boats, a 55 and a 48 before we were half way, and were hook down and done with breakfast when they arrived later.
It's still blowing the dogs off the chains here in the sheltered anchorage, with gusts to 30 as the wind rolls down the hills.
It's nap time, then ashore this afternoon to pillage and photograph the natives.
