Bay d'Avea
03 September 2007 | Huahine
Susan and Steve
We slid south inside the lagoon to the southern tip of Huahine, a twisty narrow, shallow passage where depths go to 16 feet and the Captain breaks out in a sweat. It was worth it; Bay d'Avea is lovely with a powdered coral bottom that hugs anchors, two nice restaurants and endless beach. Shortly after we arrived we noticed an elderly woman working the shoreline with a net; this afternoon she came back to the water with her chair, fishing line and the bait fish she had caught in the net. Time to fish for dinner. Casting here is different; no pole, no reel, just a line, hook and sinker. Twirl it around half a dozen times and let it fly as far as it will go; then sit down and wait to find out what dinner looks like. We hoped we might engage her in a conversation, but no English, no French, just Tahitian, and lots of that.
What a lovely lady.
