Big sailing toy!

19 May 2008 | Bora Bora
Surprise
Do you think the mega rich get together and decide where to cruise their big toys? We had heard that Maltese Falcon was in the neighborhood and yesterday she turned up in Bora Bora. Our photo is from a short day sail they did outside the reef as she is way too big to be sailing inside the lagoon; sorry it's not clearer, she was 3.6 miles away. Certainly is a dramatic sight, but with full sails and a good breeze all we saw was 13 knots downwind and 10 knots upwind, not very exciting on something over 200' in length and $120Million. Her owner, Tom Perkins, did a book about her, it's called "Mine's Bigger," really.

Our first storm of this season passed through last night; not a heavyweight and we're firmly anchored in a nice sandy cove with decent protection. Still breezy, rainy and bouncy enough to remind us nice quiet nights are to be treasured.

Our schedule has gotten more complex, adding two large groups of boats who are working their way around the world. We are trying to avoid them because the next few stops will be at islands with limited anchorages.
