Surprise
After watching the Australian Navy Band march through the streets, and a slim US presence in the Heilala parade (a few Peace Corp kids being silly on bicycles) , we can hold our heads up high in Nukulofa. US warship 56 announced her arrival this afternoon on Channel 16, calling for Nukulofa port control, and calling again, and calling again. Steve finally got on the radio and informed them that in our week here Nukulofa port control rarely answered a hail on 16, but monitored no other channel to our knowledge. Eventually they were recognized and port control responded that they were sending the pilot boat. US 56 responded that since she was 1000 yards from her anchorage a pilot was not necessary, and by the way their arrival had been set for 1600 hours and it was now 1700. Welcome to Tonga time! So the USS John S McCain is anchored a half mile from us--we're both flying our flags and we at least feel kinship. They just don't know Surprise's history (the historical Surprise that is) or they might feel kinship too.
