Marathon Florida Keys
15 March 2019 | Marathon Florida
We intended to stay in Marathon Florida Keys for one month, but weather and boat projects kept us here for two months instead. Best laid plans …
We were tied to a mooring ball in Boot Key Harbor. Boot Key Harbor has great protection from weather in all directions. The Mooring field has 270 mooring balls which is run by the city of Marathon. The wait list to get a mooring ball was 10 to 20 boats the entire time we were there. Boot Key Harbor is a very popular staging area for boats waiting to cross the gulf stream into the Bahamas.
It's a good liveaboard/cruising community.
Kemah to Pensacola
28 November 2018 | Pensacola
We finally made it to Pensacola the day before Thanksgiving, two weeks after leaving Kemah Texas. After a week of waiting on weather in Sabine Texas, we headed offshore not heeding the gail force winds announcement by the Coast Guard via VHF after being offshore. By dark we were in 6 to 8 foot seas on our starboard quarter, and northwest winds were a steady 35 knots with gusts in low 40 knots. It was very cold and uncomfortable, so we decided to head back to shore and continue heading east via the ICW. Getting thru Louisiana was the most time-consuming part of the trip, taking 4.5 days, and only 1.5 days getting thru Mississippi, Alabama to Pensacola! It was an aggressive schedule, so no opportunity to visit any sights or take pictures.
We are docked at the Palafox Marina which is located in downtown Pensacola, and is in walking distance to a lot of restaurants and shops. Our plan is to stay here for couple of weeks and visit family, then head south to warmer weather.
