Getting ready to launch!

Bottom's back up to snuff (thanks Dan Baker!) and we're making lots of little upgrades below decks including repairs to fridge lids and rebedding leaky hatches and chain plates. We've also added another set of reef points to the new mainsail to help make it work more efficiently.

Afloat again!

Ahoy Maties! BAHATI found herself afloat again last week with a new coat of Micron 66 bottom paint and a new set of deep cell Trojan batteries! She's lookin' and feelin' smart and powerful, ready to go for a sail. We're hoping to head Downeast with Josh, Maria, and Diego toward the end of July and then take the month of August to just poke around some of her old stompin' grounds. Hoohah! Summer in Maine! She's still on the market with price reduced to $99.9k, a hell of a deal, but, fortunately, no one's jumped on it, yet! Onward! We are sure looking forward to some gunkholing and helping the old girl stretch her wings a bit! Hope to see y'all out there!

Update!

It's been quite some time since we last posted to this blog, almost 2 years, in fact! Since that time, BAHATI has been moored in SoFreeMe and also been on the market. As of January, 2016, her asking price has been lowered to $100k, a real steal! She's got all new canvass in stunning green not to mention [...]

BAHATI gets a face-lift!

Spring is finally here after a particularly cold and snowy winter in Maine. BAHATI spent a couple of months in the paint shed at Brewers where she had a bunch of beautiful work done on her topsides, rudder and keel taking care if a couple of wet spots and then covering all with a gorgeous Whisper Grey [...]

On th hard again!

Once BAHATI is on the hard in winter storage here in SoFreeMe, just in time to welcome hurricane Sandy. We were fortunate that most of the storm stayed well south of us but we did have some high winds around flood tide two nights ago. We are grieving for the good folks in NY/NJ who felt the worst of [...]

Capt Biscuits, rain rain rain!
Spring is finally here after a particularly cold and snowy winter in Maine. BAHATI spent a couple of months in the paint shed at Brewers where she had a bunch of beautiful work done on her topsides, rudder and keel taking care if a couple of wet spots and then covering all with a gorgeous Whisper Grey awlgrip job. She's officially back on the market and the broker of record is Willie Thomas at Brewers So Freeport Marine. Willie can be reached at 207-865-1994. If she does not sell, we'll be contemplating an Atlantic crossing during the summer of 2015. For the moment, BAHATI will remain on the hard and we will be heading south of the Equator for 3 months work in Oz. of course, we hope to do a little sailing at the same time...on someone else's boat!

If you or anyone you know are interested in taking a closer look at BAHATI while we are gone please feel free to call Willie and make an appointment.

We keep upgrading the old boat. Lots of little fix-its this spring! A new boom and maisail with in-boom reefing lines managed from the cockpit last summer.

We are finally home again! We tied-up at the HYC dock in SoFreeMe @ 1000hrs on Fri June 17! Check-out this album for some highlights of our passages north. The weather was challenging all the way but the crew was great and we were able to manage arrivals and departures smoothly. We cleared customs and immigration in New Bedford with no problems and arrived in Casco Bay again after nearly 5 yrs at sea in the wee hrs of June 17. Cheers all!

Here you will find some images from St Lucia, Guadaloupe, the Saints, Martinique, Antigua and St Maarten....small pieces of the Caribbean which we have not seen in nearly 5 years.....nice to be in home waters again!

Our last passage before "tying the knot" was a rocky rolly run of about 100nm from Barbados where we landed after our 5200nm Atlantic crossing and quickly found our way to the Mt Gay factory! CapB managed to score a "red cap", the Mt Gay icon, thanks to the good and generous help of "Sherri"! a real coup!! Nat's sister, Martha, and her hubby, Jim, joined us on this short passage and then stayed on to relax in paradise for a few days.....ahhhhhhh! We are thrilled to be back on this sweet island, put our feet up for a bit, and enjoy the "good life"! "Finest Kind"!

Our longest (time not miles-wise) passage to-date....45 days from So Africa back to the Caribbean! We crossed the Equator for the 4th time on this voyage and caught (well, landed!) only 2 fish on the entire paasage.....one mahi-mahi on the day before arriving in St Helena, and another wahoo on the day before arriving on Barbados....another record broken! Our stalwart crew, Wes and Sarah Haskell, and Susan Hoff, did yeoman's (and women's) work and became shellbacks to boot! Check-out the gallery for proof!

Over New Year's we stayed at the lovely "stable/flat" of new friends, Jen and Raijk, on the corner of Warren and Camden Streets (!) Our new crew members, Sarah and Wes, flew in from Maine via Abu Dhabi, and we hit the Cape Town streets for NY's Eve with them....party down! On January 1, 2011 we took the gondola ride up Table Mtn and enjoyed spectacular views of the entire Cape Point region...an amazing ride and awesome vista!

After a long (17 days!) passage from Cocos Keeling to Mauritius, and a lovely stay there and then on the island of Reunion, we found our way round the bottom of Madagascar to Durban, SA! A wonderful homecoming for BAHATI, 22 yrs after leaving here, and a delightful respite from a rough and woolie time at sea for her crew! Herewith a few of the highlights, including a family photo of Gareth Weiss, who sailed with us in the Caribbean, and his beautiful partner, Ana, and their sweet daughter, Maya. Enjoy!

After returning alone from Maine to Langkawi following the loss of his dear dad in April, Capt Biscuits immediately set sail south toward Singapore, solo down the Malacca Straits, (something he swore not to do again!) This time he had the good company of BOOMERANG Bob also solo on his boat. BAHATI and BOOMERANG made a good team en route! Upon arrival at Puteri Marina in Johor, Cap B felt the need for some R&R and knowing that old friends, Ben Fowler and Sarah Haskell, were visiting "Uncle Jerry" Knecht, (the King of Dead Fish and Sustainable Fisheries in SE Asia and Maine!), he jumped on a plane and spent a lovely and loving 4 days in the good company of dear friends....just what his grieving soul needed! Herewith, some highlights!

After the arrival of Josh, his pal, Luke, and Ben Powers to help us sail "west young man!", we survived a week of provisioning and repairs, and BAHATI finally resumed her round-the-world path where she'd left it off a year earlier....heading toward the setting sun again.... Christmas Island, Cocos Keeling, Mauritius, Reunion, Madagascar and on toward So Africa! for Christmas!

Cap B left S'pore on Aug 10 with Tim Van Ness aboard as mate. We found our way slowly south and east and arrived in Bali on Aug 29...and Tim flew home the next evening! It was not an easy passage...mostly upwind...but we were graced with two of the best days of sailing in memory! Here are some highlights!

After leaving Puteri marina in Jahor we moved BAHATI down to Raffles Marina in Singapore to get some much-needed work done by the pro-crew @ Marina yacht Svcs. Tim Van Ness joined me here and we are sailing south toward Bali together having arrived @ Nongsa Point on the island of Batam yesterday, Aug 10, our 1st stop in Indonesia since last year! While visiting S'pore Capt Biscuits traveled to Seoul, Tokyo, and Kuala Lumpur to earn some important cash to help pay for all the expensive upgrades!

Cap B and Mate Betsy had the blessing of a week in Bangkok at the Banyan Tree Hotel where Nat was teaching a couple of programs for the Ariel Group. Betsy took a Thai cooking class and lounged (as well as fought off a case of the cruds!) A great escape and a chance to visit old friends Joel, Orapin, and Jasmine Gluck, as well as Lot and Saiyud who we met first visiting Roy Owen and Sue McClinton back in 1998 when Josh and Nat went to Nepal. Nat also got to teach a drama therapy workshop for a wonderful group of artists and teachers at a Bangkok puppet theater! Sweet memories!

After nearly three months of exploring this wonderful coast-line we are getting ready to sail south again with our new crew, Christopher Blake and the memories of a great visit from old friends Chris and Teo von Baeyer! Bon Voyage! Sawadeekap! (NB: The "group shot" was taken at a puppet theater in Bangkok where Capt B was asked to lead a drama therapy workshop with a remarkable group of artists and teachers who spent the day exploring dreams together...a very different form of sailing! What a gift!)

After our Christmas morning debacle we found our way to Boat Lagoon in Phuket and, after a long search, met Mike Hjort, and his able crew at Pro-Carpentering, who quickly got to work and after 2 weeks are almost finished with repairs. They are doing a great job and we are most grateful! (So is BAHATI!)

After more than 6 months, we finally were able to reconnect with our old friends, Eivind and Heidi, aboard the Norwegian s/v EMPIRE! They spent the last year in Oz while we were in NZ...and they were busy launching a new crew member! Young Eirik arrived on March 4 and this week was our first chance to meet him! He's quite a character and already seems well acclimated to life afloat! We look forward to welcoming this stalwart crew when they arrive in Maine ina year or two en route home to Oslo!

It was a rock 'n' roll 12 days from Port Vila to Cairns with winds ranging from 0 to 35 knts...and seas all over the map! We were lucky to have a low that had been forming near Fiji pass astern of us and land on NZ but the result was strogn southerlies for us which made for tricky routing round the reefs leading onto the Queensland coast. Thanks to the good guidance of Bob McDavitt (in Auckland) and Josh (standing by in CA!) we were well-versed on the weather systems as they swept us along. We are also grateful to Russell Radio for their good daily HF radio sked which kept our families posted on our lat-long each evening! Finally, thanks to Ben White for being on EPIRB alert as always....and to Cam Grillo for his able watch-keeping on his last passage with us! Cam is headed back to Maine to enjoy the rest of the summer. He joined us in Auckland and April and has done yeoman's service in the rig, at the helm, and under the hull as we found our way to New Caledonia and Vanuatu and now Oz! Thanks Cameron! This passage across the Coral Sea seems to have been mostly about birds! We had a number of them join us as hitchhikers over the 12 days...most came at dusk and stayed until dawn....snoozing and pooping! They made for good if somewhat messy company! Several of them ran into our Rutland wind gen and got knocked about...one landing on deck with a thud and seemed stunned nestling up to the deck box without moving all night and then struggling to rail and finally finding the strength and presence to fly again at dawn on Betsy's watch. Quite a sight! We have never had this quantity of visitation...the last two sailed right thru the Barrier Reef and almost into Cairns with us....amazing!

On June 28, after installing the new oil pressure sender and getting it up and running, the wind turned north, making it hard to sail toward Pentacoste, and with only one day left this year to witness the remarkable land-diving ritual, Capt B decided to take the Air Van flight 45' north from Efate to catch the infamous event which happens only in April, May and June when the vines are flexible enough and the yams are busy growing! This bizarre and thrilling ritual is supposed to help the yams grow better! Who knows?? It sure must help the young men of this community stay fit and "pumped"! Take a look at some of these photos to get a sense of how awesome this experience can be! The entire village participates in one way or another...preparing the vines and the tower....dancing and singing to cheer the "jumpers" on....simply witnessing, as I did, with pride and amazement...digging the earth beneath the tower to help pad the landing....cheering from the sidelines....it's all just incredible! I understand, tho have not seen, that there is a U-Tube video of this event which may get you even more upfront and personal...check it out!! And enjoy some of our photos as a taste treat!! WoW!!

On Captain Biscuits 59th birthday, BAHATI finally set sail from Opua and headed north toward Vanuatu. After 6 days at sea and some fast sailing we made the decision to divert to Noumea, New Caledonia as we faced a fuel tank issue and some on-going problems with the mainsail. We arrived in Noumea safely after a good passage tho fraught with squalls and confused seas. BAHATI and crew took it all in stride! And we managed to catch a lovely albacaore tuna, a nice face mahi-mahi, and a baracuda (who got away!) Many thanks to Russell Radio for their regular evening skeds and for alerting our relatives as to our whereabouts daily while en route.
