Day 8 - Saturday May 24 - Big Jump

25 May 2014 | 05 13.88'S:112 41.52'W, 1,341 miles west of Galapagos
We started the day with the first nice sun rise with no clouds blocking the sun. We made eggs, onion, green pepper, tomato & bacon tortilla wraps with OJ. Yum! We then saw what looked like a boat in the distance - how exciting! But it turned out to be a sea buoy. It did not show up on our radar or AIS system. Good thing we did not hit it! Hopefully, it is lit up at night?

I did another 2 loads of wash while we ran the generator and did 2 runs (2 hours) on the water maker. We make 14 gallons/hour with our Spectra reverse osmosis water maker. We carry 500 gallons of water in 4 tanks and try to start every passage with full tanks. However, the anchorage in Isabella had a lot of seaweed and crud from the nearby reef, so we didn't run the water maker much because we did not want to clog up the intake valve, filters and membrane. So, our tanks were about half full when we left on this trip, which should be enough water for the 2 of us for 3 weeks if we are conservative. Water management on the boat includes the infamous "navy shower" (get wet, turn the water off, wash, turn the water on and rinse). Our washing machine is HE and uses relatively little water.

Our main mid-day meal was left over honey-ginger fish, rice and caprice salad. Dinner was snacks including soup with the leftover chicken curry and hearts of palm salad.

By dinner time, the sea had built up once again to 12 foot seas, which is beginning to seem normal for this passage. We just learned that one of our friends ahead of us lost their autopilot and is now steering their boat by hand. Thankfully, they have their two teenage children on board, so they have 4 people to share the 24 hour watches. With these seas, that is tough work! They have a Hallberg-Rassy 53 and are doing 200 miles per day, so they are having a good ride in spite of it! We have a fairly new autopilot, plus a backup autopilot. After driving the boat during our sail adjustments, I certainly wouldn't want to have to man the helm for days on end in these conditions! Knock on wood!

We had a 162 mile day. Tony is complaining again that I am the "reef monster" and preventing us from making 200 miles/day because with 23 knots wind, I've been wanting to reef at night. What is the difference between 19 and 20 days? Not much. What is the difference between a boat with a mast and one without? Hmmm!

Extra: P.S. Cetacea is the higher order biological name for whales and dolphins. Whales and dolphins are cetaceans. And our boat is a big fat whale of a boat, hence the name Cetacea! Not to mention that Tony & Gail, like all sailors, love whales.
