Yanmar engine repairs - Replacing the oil cooler

Before heading to Chula Vista where we left the boat for the summer, we spent a couple of days anchored in Glorietta Bay as a nice break after working on the boat. While inspecting the engine before leaving Shelter Cove Marian, I had noticed a slight seepage around the oil cooler raw water intake at [...]

San Diego - Shelter Island, Glorietta Bay, Chula Vista

After finishing the Baja Bash, we stayed at Shelter Island to work on the boat and haul-out at Driscoll's. We made a coouple of trips to Glorietta Bay in Coronado for a total of five nights. Before we headed back to the NW, we took the boat to Chula Vista where it will be moored for the summer.

Fixing a leaky hull seam in Mazatlan

Hull seam repairs on Northern Lights being done in Mazatlan, where the seam area forward of the keel was the source of the small, persistent mast step leak from flaws in the filler. The original seam filler is being ground out, the area dried, then it will be epoxied and covered with two layers of glass [...]

Gulf of California - La Paz to Puerto Escondido and Loreto

10 December 2014 | Puerto Escondido
Rod Deyo
We made a 10 day trip up the Gulf of California to Puerto Escondido and Loreto. The weather was generally good with lighter N 5-15 kn winds except for a couple of days when it was blowing N 20-25+ kns. We sailed when conditions allowed, but powered in the lighter winds.

Our favorite anchorages were Caleta Partida and San Evaristo. San Evaristo is particularly nice with a wide bay and sand bottom in 20 ft. It has a small tienda (no beer, fresh food delivered two days a week, but no beer) and desalinated water (with a sign to call "Agua Tony" on Ch 16). Compared with other fishing villages north of La Paz, it was rather active with kids being delivered to the local school by panga and both fishing and construction activity.

We also anchored in the "Hook" on Isla San Francisco and Agua Verde on the way up. Puerto Escondido was pretty desolate, but we got a mooring buoy there and rented a car to get to Loreto each day.

Our itinerary was:
29 Nov - La Paz to Caleta Pardita.
30 Nov - Caleta Pardita to Isla San Francisco.
1 Dec - Anchored in Hook at Isla San Francisco. N wind 18-25+ to the west down the San Jose Channel.
2 Dec - Isla San Francisco to San Evaristo. Beat up the San Jose Channel in N 15-18 kn.
3 Dec - San Evaristo to Agua Verde. Agua Verde was very crowded with 11 boats in the northern cove to avoid the N swell from the winds.
4 Dec - Agua Verde to Puerto Escondido. Puerto Escondido has the marina office, a fuel dock, ship yard, small tienda, and a few cruisers, mainly anchored in the Waiting Room and Oval.
5-7 Dec - Puerto Escondido. Rented car to travel around Loreto. Tried getting to San Xavier, but road was in very bad condition.
8 Dec - Puerto Escondido to San Evaristo. Early start to make the 66 nm to San Evaristo before dark. Left about 0615 and got in about 1545.
9 Dec - San Evaristo to La Paz. Light winds for most of the day. Overcast and muggy.
