Yanmar engine repairs - Replacing the oil cooler

Before heading to Chula Vista where we left the boat for the summer, we spent a couple of days anchored in Glorietta Bay as a nice break after working on the boat. While inspecting the engine before leaving Shelter Cove Marian, I had noticed a slight seepage around the oil cooler raw water intake at [...]

San Diego - Shelter Island, Glorietta Bay, Chula Vista

After finishing the Baja Bash, we stayed at Shelter Island to work on the boat and haul-out at Driscoll's. We made a coouple of trips to Glorietta Bay in Coronado for a total of five nights. Before we headed back to the NW, we took the boat to Chula Vista where it will be moored for the summer.

Fixing a leaky hull seam in Mazatlan

Hull seam repairs on Northern Lights being done in Mazatlan, where the seam area forward of the keel was the source of the small, persistent mast step leak from flaws in the filler. The original seam filler is being ground out, the area dried, then it will be epoxied and covered with two layers of glass [...]

La Cruz Shipyard Haul Out

18 January 2015 | La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nayarit, Mexico

When we first got to Banderas Bay, we scheduled a much needed haulout for S/V Northern Lights. We wanted to repair the mysterious and persistent leak in the port anchor locker drain and clean the bottom and inspect and replace the Maxprop and prop shaft zincs.

We hauled the boat at La Cruz shipyard on Wed, 14 Jan and were back in the water on Sat 17 Jan. Sea Tek (Pedro Vargas) did the actual work on the boat and did a fine job.

The work included:

- Repairing the port anchor drain leak.
- Painting the bottom with two coats (and a third coat around water line) of Grado Marino Marel Transocean Marine Paint
- Putting Propspeed on the Maxprop and shaft
- Installing zincs on the Maxprop and shaft

The anchor drain hole on port was the source of our very mysterious and perisistent leak in rough seas that we'd had since Vancouver Island in July. Finding the actual source of the leak took six months. CSR in Seattle tried to identify it in Aug, but was unable to find the source. The breakthrough came in the passage from Ensenada de Los Muertos to Mazatlan - the conditions were rough enough to have the leak flowing, but not so rough that I wasn't willing to pull up the entire floor and molding in the forward cabin. Once the floor was removed, it was clear the water was coming down the fiberglass bonding cable conduit from the anchor locker or void space under the locker. When we got to Banderas Bay, filling the anchor locker by sealing it on the inside did not show any leak (which likely was why CSR didn't find it) but when it was unsealed the leak started as the water ran out under pressure. The port side drain as the actual source was verified by running a hose against the drain. The easy repair was to enlarge slightly and fiberglass the hole and we tested it by running a hose against both locker drains again and checking there was no leakage forward even after several minutes.
